Twitter is a very very noisy platform which is why I don’t necessarily think that it is the best place to post content to get your content seen from a native point of view. Therefore building up huge followings on Twitter may not be (but not always) as efficient as other social media platforms.
But what Twitter is really good at is being able to reach out to people one to one to schedule meetings or describe whatever your brand is to individuals who may be able to help you to gain more exposure in the sense of media.
It is also useful if you have no money to spend on paid social media ads where you can find very targeted and in real time users who are talking about whatever you are trying to open a conversation about.
In other words it is a great one to one sales tool that will allow you to get right to the decision maker a lot of times and get real feedback without having to spend money or wait until your ads start to perform.
If you are someone who likes to take their destiny into their own hands and not test and play the hope and pray game then Twitter search will be perfect for you. Below is what it looks like
In order to get to this screen above you are going to visit search.twitter.com and then you will want to do an advanced search and then you are going to want to type in the key words, phrases, hashtags, dates etc that you are trying to reach out to.
When you do this and hit search you are then going to see a bunch of posts from people that fit that particular description.
Once you have this list of people you can reach out to, the next thing you are going to want to do is open up a conversation about what it is you have to offer.
The best way to do this is to find a way to solve a problem or a solution that adds value to the person who posted it.
Whatever you do DO NOT go in for the close right away or you will more than likely turn the person off and get a negative reaction.
Also your mindset is everything when you first reach out. Think of Twitter no different than if you were in a public place meeting people.
You want to have the same mannerisms and etiquette that you have in person (assuming you have those) online and that is how you can get results.
Now once you start to figure out what works for you and what kind of conversations you need to be having in order to get the end result that you want, you can then hire some help to scale up your outreach.
I have had great success with this in other companies where Twitter made sense to use in this way. I also used this successfully on Linkedin since these are the two platforms that seem to perform really well in the business space BUT it also works in the consumer space as well.
Twitter requires creativity and tons of outreach to get responses. But I can promise you this, if you spend your time reaching out to the right people with the right message then Twitter can work really well for you.
In this case (Twitter) I wouldn’t overly concern yourself with how many followers you have unless your business model is to become an influencer where you get paid to advertise for other companies.
I would use the outreach as a key metric to measure to see what your return is on invested time and then hire more and more help to repeat those same actions on a very large scale until you reach the goal that you want with Twitter!
